Because Rahul Saxena Did Not Make A Last Will
Rahul Saxena, a 28 year old man, with a picture-perfect life. The perfect job at a leading MNC with a great package and fabulous perks, a beautiful fiancé, a duplex apartment at Mumbai’s celebrity hub, Bandra, 2 awesome wheels – a 7 series BMW and a newly bought Chevrolet Cruze and a grand holiday home in a hill station just 100 kms away. Wow!
Rahul was a complete workaholic. He was so passionate about his work. He used to lock himself up in his cabin for hours together to figure out solutions to serious issues, with a strict do not disturb policy. 29th of March was one such day. He was very busy filling the year ending papers. At around 1pm, he took a half an hour breather for lunch. Then, he locked himself up in his cabin again. At 7 pm, when his secretary Stacy was leaving for the day, she decided to check on him and let him know that she was leaving and if he needed anything. This was just a regular practice with her boss. But there was something unusual that day. Because Rahul wasn’t answering his line. She then knocked on the door for 10 minutes, when she decided she couldn’t wait anymore.
She rushed to her desk and grabbed the keys and opened the cabin door. She was surprised to see that he wasn’t there. When she looked around, she was shocked at what she saw. Rahul was lying on the floor behind his desk next to his chair. His cell phone was vibrating on the table. It was Sheetal. Stacy immediately answered and told his fiancé what had happened. She asked her to rush to the nearest hospital and that she would meet her there. Stacy did exactly that. She called up security and they hurried Rahul to the nearest critical care centre. He was declared dead on arrival. They found out later that he had had a heart attack at around 3 pm that day.
Sheetal was devasted. She was just about to start her life with him and it had all ended. She was in grief for all of the next month. After which she was forced to come out of this grief, when she received a court notice saying that she needs to vacate the residence and that she is not liable to any inheritance from him. She had to leave the house that was going to be hers. That her fiancé had bought for them to begin their married life in.
Rahul did all that he could for Sheetal, to keep her happy. He loved her a lot. But, he did not make a Last Will. He earned and made a life for her, but did not nominate her for it. Rahul’s entire property was going to his sister Alka, who hadn’t even visited him since their parents died in a plane crash 6 years ago. The law states that ‘If the person who dies without a Last Will is not married and has no children, then the estate goes to his or her parents. If the parents are deceased, the estate is split among siblings.’
And that is exactly what happened.
Sheetal had left her job 2 years ago, when Rahul proposed to her. She practically had no savings., nowhere to live and no one to look up to for help. Her only hope and support in life was gone. And he had left her nothing. Well, only if Rahul had known what was going to happen, he would have made a Last Will. But who does? All those hard working hours that he spent at work so that Sheetal could have a better future, a happy life, all had gone in vain and into the bank accounts of his selfish elder sibling, Alka.
Don’t let this happen to you. We all think that we will live forever, but really life is very unpredictable. So think of your loved ones. You have earned all your money, and only you have the right to decide who should inherit it. Make a Last Will now. Don’t make the difficult times more difficult.
